A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit. De basisfunctie ervan is het onderbreken van de stroom nadat er een fout is gedetecteerd. In tegenstelling tot een zekering, die één keer werkt en dan moet worden vervangen, een stroomonderbreker kan worden gereset (handmatig of automatisch) om de normale werking te hervatten.
Stroomonderbrekers zijn gemaakt in verschillende maten, van kleine apparaten die zwakstroomcircuits of individuele huishoudelijke apparaten beschermen, tot grote schakelapparatuur die is ontworpen om hoogspanningscircuits te beschermen die een hele stad voeden. De algemene functie van een stroomonderbreker, of zekering, als automatisch middel om de stroom uit een defect systeem te verwijderen, wordt vaak afgekort als OCPD (Overstroombeveiligingsapparaat).
